Preparing to Serve: Naval History from the Gustavus Archives Posted on February 15th, 2021 by

Did you know that Gustavus played an important role in training Navy and Marine Corps personnel during the Second World War? In late 1942, Gustavus, along with many other colleges and universities across the United States, was selected to participate in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This program was created in a massive effort to create large numbers of commissioned officers in both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Check out the Naval History display on the third floor of the library (outside the College Archives). You’ll gain a greater understanding of what this program entailed and even see what the V-12 curriculum looked like for students at Gustavus. Also included in the display are photos from the 1943 Gustavian yearbook showing students in their Navy and Marine Corps uniforms.
